The Astoria-Megler Bridge, which was formally dedicated August 27, 1966, stretches 4.1 miles from Astoria, Oregon, across the mouth of the Columbia River, to Point Ellice, Washington. Its construction was an impressive feat. The bridge's main span is 1,232 feet in length, the longest “continuous truss” in the nation. This campground is huge. We drove all over checking out other sites. Single and Large Tent Size Sites. Plenty of RV Sites. They even had Cabins. We could have easily had all three 12' X 10' Tents on 1 Site. For an additional $8.00. You can request another Picnic Table. Bathrooms with flushing toilets. Find a Campground. RV campgrounds can be as small as a few dozen sites to booming resorts with hundreds of sites, catering to RVs of every type and size. Some RVers prefer the simple solitude of campgrounds that provide just the basics of electricity and freshwater at the site. Others prefer full-service options with electricity, water,.
If you’re a regular camper or RVer, you’ve probably heard of the KOA (Kampgrounds of America).
There are nearly 500 KOAs in the United States alone, with campgrounds in every state except three (Delaware, Hawaii and Rhode Island), and over 30 locations in Canada.
The KOA makes it easy to travel across North America in your camper or RV.
Campers find consistent quality at each location, often with extra amenities that you don’t often find at other campgrounds.
They have sites that accommodate larger RVs with all hookups and even patios, as well as smaller sites with fewer hookups.
How much does it cost to stay at a KOA campground in an RV?
Campsites at KOAs cost an average of $40 – $80 per night, and in the U.S., the average cost is around $56. Many KOA campgrounds also have cabins and other lodgings available, which range between $50 and $250 per night.
In this article, I have collected the data so that you can estimate your nightly costs to stay at a KOA in the United States.
This data is based on two adults camping in a 35-foot RV, so your costs may be more or less depending on the size of your family and your site specifications (if you have a smaller RV or camper, your campsite may be cheaper).
Some states are more expensive to camp in, and KOA locations near popular tourist attractions or cities may be more expensive as well.
You can also sign up for KOA’s Value Kard, which will save you around 10 percent.
But before we talk about the average costs and savings, let’s quickly review the amenities KOA offers.
Amenities at KOA
Every KOA campsite comes with basic amenities included in your nightly price:
- Clean restrooms and hot showers (some are closed due to COVID-19)
- Spacious and level campsites
- Fire pits and picnic tables
- KOA camp stores
- Laundry facilities
- Many KOA campgrounds also have additional amenities to enjoy, including:
- Fenced, off-leash pet parks
- Swimming pools
- Playgrounds
Finally, some KOA locations offer deluxe amenities at certain sites. These sites will cost more, but it may be worth it if you’re wanting to splurge a little for your camping adventure.
KOA deluxe amenities make your campsite a luxury outdoor living space just outside your camper, with offerings such as:
- Concrete, wood or stone patios
- Patio furniture (more than just a picnic table)
- Private hot tub for two (with a privacy screen)
- Destination views
- And more
Why Are KOA Campsites and Cabins So Expensive?
They’re expensive because KOA campgrounds are privately owned and operated, they organization can set the price.
They have also set a high standard for what they offer at each KOA campground location, and you’ll typically find more included amenities at a KOA than other public and even private campgrounds.
For example, at a typical campground, the amenities are just a level site with a firepit or grill and picnic table, basic hookups, and access to shared toilet and shower facilities.
At a KOA, you’ll have all of the above, plus extras such as a pool, family activities, firewood, and more, and maybe even extra site amenities such as a patio or even a hot tub.
Many KOAs even offer special events like live concerts or animal presentations, which campers can enjoy at no additional cost.
Finally, not only do the KOA locations offer a higher standard of a camping experience, they must meet certain inspection qualities in order to retain their status as a KOA location. This is why KOA campgrounds are more expensive.
